Dōtanuki Masakuni
Auch bekannt als: Dōtanuki
Beschreibung
Dōtanuki Masakuni represents the Dōtanuki school of Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture). Known for the motto 'It shall not break, not bend, and cut well,' the school's unpretentious, robust style was built for actual combat, making their blades favorites of Sengoku warriors. Widely used by the retainers of Katō Kiyomasa, Dōtanuki swords embody the fierce spirit of Higo samurai. Their emphasis on function over ornament has led to renewed appreciation for representing the 'true essence of the sword as a weapon.' In Touken Ranbu, Dōtanuki is portrayed as a bold warrior, and its appeal as a combat-first blade has attracted many fans.
Legenden & Geschichten
The Dōtanuki name rose to fame through its appearance in Kabuki adaptations of 'Chūshingura.' Historically, after Katō Kiyomasa took control of Higo, he equipped his retainers with Dōtanuki blades. The formidable army of the 'Demon Warrior' Kiyomasa owed much of its might to these sturdy weapons. While Dōtanuki blades receive modest acclaim as art objects, their cutting performance in tameshigiri tests was said to be outstanding. Their no-nonsense, function-first philosophy stands in stark contrast to swords prized for tea-ceremony-like elegance, representing the Japanese sword's fundamental purpose as a weapon. Among modern tameshigiri (test cutting) practitioners, Dōtanuki remains highly sought after, carrying on the tradition of the combat blade.
