粟田口国吉
Awataguchi Kuniyoshi
Auch bekannt als: Awataguchi Kuniyoshi; Supreme Master Before Yoshimitsu; Prized Sword of the Imperial Household
Beschreibung
Awataguchi Kuniyoshi is a tantō by one of the Six Brothers of the Awataguchi school — a group of master swordsmiths who worked in Kyoto's Awataguchi district in the early to mid-Kamakura period, establishing the Yamashiro tradition's foundational aesthetic. Kuniyoshi worked a generation before Yoshimitsu (Tōshirō Yoshimitsu) and represents the pure Awataguchi aesthetic at its most classical: fine, densely packed ko-itame grain glowing with a white luminosity, a refined ko-suguha hamon of quiet elegance, and an overall proportion of disciplined Kyoto refinement. A National Treasure held by the Imperial Household Agency at the Sannomaru Shōzōkan in Tokyo, its connection to the imperial court reflects the deep historical bond between the Awataguchi smiths and Japan's highest authority.
Legenden & Geschichten
The Six Brothers of Awataguchi — Kunitomo, Kuniyasu, Kuniyoshi, Kuniie, Kunikiyo, and Kunitsuna — represent one of the great miracles of Japanese sword history: an entire family of masters, working in the same Kyoto district, each achieving the highest standards while sharing the distinctive Awataguchi aesthetic. Kuniyoshi, the specialist in tantō, stands as the bridge between the school's founding generation and its supreme master Yoshimitsu. That his work entered the imperial collection is no accident: the Awataguchi smiths were, from the beginning, the swordsmiths of the court, their location at Kyoto's eastern gateway placing them beside the institutions of imperial power. For the emperor to possess a Kuniyoshi tantō was, in a culture where the divine sword was among the Three Imperial Treasures, an act of continuity with the deepest roots of Japanese sovereignty. The Sannomaru Shōzōkan, opened to the public in 2023, now allows ordinary citizens to encounter this connection face to face.
