金沢城
Kanazawa Castle
Überblick
Kanazawa Castle was the seat of the Maeda clan, lords of the million-koku Kaga domain, and prospered magnificently throughout the Edo period. Though the main tower was lost to lightning in 1602 and never rebuilt, the Hishi Turret, Gojikken Nagaya storehouse, and Hashizume-mon gate turret were reconstructed in the Heisei era. The castle is dubbed a 'museum of stone walls' for the remarkable variety of masonry techniques visible — from rough natural stone to precisely cut ashlar — spanning multiple eras. Adjacent to Kenroku-en Garden, it symbolizes the cultural richness of the Kaga domain. The Maeda clan patronized not only martial culture but also tea ceremony, noh theater, and fine crafts.
Verbindung zu Schwertern
Though Maeda Toshiie was nicknamed 'Mataza of the Spear,' he also possessed deep knowledge of swords. The Kaga domain's million-koku wealth enabled the Maeda clan to amass an outstanding sword collection. The Ōdenta Mitsuyo, one of the Five Swords Under Heaven (Tenka Goken) forged by Miike Denta Mitsuyo, is a National Treasure that was reputedly bestowed upon Toshiie by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The domain employed official swordsmiths of the Kashū school, including Kanewaka and Darani Katsukuni. Kanazawa is also the birthplace of Kaga zōgan (inlay metalwork), where sword fitting craftsmanship reached extraordinary heights. The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art houses numerous swords and fittings from the Maeda collection.
